Multi-faith Iftar Dinner

Saturday, March 15 at 6:30pm

Morristown United Methodist Church is delighted to once again welcome Peace Islands Institute for a Ramadan presentation followed by an Iftar dinner, the meal taken at sunset to break the daily fast during Ramadan.

Peace Island Institute’s mission is to promote inter-faith dialogue and friendship to create understanding and peace in our society. The Ramadan Programs shared by PII are impactful initiatives that celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and promote interfaith dialogue and harmony, providing a platform for people of all backgrounds to come together, learn, and share in the blessings of the sacred month. In the Muslim tradition, Ramadan is the holiest month, one of spiritual reflection, fasting and prayer. PII shares, “Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, but it’s also an opportunity to extend the spirit of unity and friendship to the broader community.” This year it begins on February 28.

Enjoy a delicious Iftar dinner prepared by Turkish American women, and come together with people from the Greater Morristown community for conversations that will deepen our relationships with one another and foster understanding, empathy, and stronger relationships across our diverse communities.

Join us in embracing the values of compassion, peace, and togetherness during Ramadan and beyond.

RSVP required by March 9 to ensure enough food for all: bit.ly/2025MUMCIftarDinner
We encourage you to fast (if health permits) to be in spiritual unity with all.

Lent Begins on March 5 with Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday begins our Lenten journey, which can be – needs to be – both an individual and a corporate experience. This year we will let music be our guide to connecting our hearts to our minds, our beliefs to our actions. As we lose ourselves in the music, we will find ourselves closer to our own feelings, faith, and fears. We invite you to experience music and open yourself to feel and the feels. And together we will learn or remember, that God will meet us there with steadfast love.

Adult Sunday School Book Study through March

The Case for a Creator by Lee Strobel

Greselda Powell, Facilitator

Science and Faith – Are they compatible?  Can Christian faith co-exist with the concept of evolution? Or are they mutually exclusive? These questions are as relevant today as they were centuries ago.  As a journalist and atheist, Lee Strobel began looking for answers using his journalistic skills through conversations with leading scientists.  His discovery changed his life!

During this six-week study, Lee Strobel will lead us through his journey where science provides evidence towards the belief in God.  We will explore the compatibility of science and faith, including the Big Bang Theory and Intelligent Design.  We will also discuss our own views and questions concerning the compatibility of science and faith.  Come join us on an adventure of faith and science.

Sessions: March 2, 9, 16; Meets Sunday mornings at 9:15am in the Wesley Room

Support Regina’s St. Baldrick’s Efforts

Our office manager, Regina, is shaving her head for St. Baldrick’s for the 10th time on March 9, and would love your support to help her reach her goal of raising $4,000 this year to find cures for childhood cancers. You can donate online at https://bit.ly/ReginaBaldAgain2025 (where you can also learn about why she does this every year!) If you to prefer to donate via check, make checks out to St. Baldrick’s and leave them for Regina in the office. THANK YOU!

Educational Presentation

Sunday, March 9  – 12pm-1pm

Black, White, and Yellow Taxis:  Morris County and The Green Book presented by Janet Foster

The first edition of the “Negro Motorist Green Book” came out in 1936, published by a New Jersey postal carrier as a way to guide African-Americans to welcoming businesses during their travels across the country. Although the guide is popularly thought of today as being used in the Jim Crow South, it covered the entire country. During its 30 years of annual publication, The Green Book listed some 581 individual businesses in 31 different New Jersey towns. In Morris County, Madison had three listings, Morristown had two, and research into what those businesses were and who operated them illuminates a whole chapter of mid-20th century history.

Janet W. Foster has been working on the New Jersey Green Book project for over two years, with a team of scholars from around the state, to identify all the sites listed in the Green Book in order to recover their histories.
