ASP is a Christian based mission project that serves the Appalachian mountain areas of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Its mission is to make homes “Warmer, Safer, and Drier” in the region, and to demonstrate that we ALL are brothers and sisters in Christ. MUMC has been sending youth on ASP mission trips for over 25 years.
ASP operates 3 full time year around centers, but its main focus is on its High School youth program which runs for 8 weeks during the Summer at 30 different locations throughout the region. It is this time period that a majority of the almost 14,000 volunteers serve on a 1 week mission trip. ASP provides the lodging (school buildings), 3 meals a day, staff, job sites, materials, and group programming. All our group has to do is get there with our work tools and work teams. Work is varied and can be anything from roofing, framing, windows, doors, interior renovation, insulation, sheet rocking, painting, waterproofing, foundation work, decks, handicap ramps, to just about anything construction related!
ASP is more than a building program though, it’s a relationship ministry. Participants will spend time interacting with the family they’ve been assigned to serve, as well as their own groups and other groups staying at the same center. Participants forge lifetime friendships, and learn lessons that will enrich their faith and build character for the rest of their lives. Armed with a new heart for Christian service, participants will begin to give back to their own families, church and community. For many, this experience is the first step towards a lifelong vocation of caring for others.
MUMC has been sending youth on ASP mission trips for over 25 years. As “missionaries in the field” the group prepares with study sessions on Appalachian culture, theology, discipleship and servant hood, teamwork and construction skills.
The ASP group also prepares for the trip by raising money for transportation, room and board, and a donation to help buy the needed building materials. By the time the actual work week arrives the whole church has become involved in a tremendous mission experience! ASP fundraisers begin in the fall and include, but are not limited, to:
- Clothing Drive
- Silent Auction/Luncheon
- Rummage Sale
- Grocery Store Gift Card Program (See Below)
- Restaurant Nights
- Variety Show
- Contributions from individuals and groups

Grocery Store Gift Card Program
Each Sunday after church, members of MUMC’s ASP mission team sell gift cards to local grocery stores (Shop-Rite, A&P, Food Basics, Super Fresh, Waldbaums, Food Emporium, Pathmark, Kings, and Stop & Shop). We sell the cards at face value and the stores donate 5% of the purchase price back to us.
